In the second episode, Angela travels to Edinburgh to meet the Irish comic who has become something of a legend in the annual Fringe Festival. Jason Byrne first appeared in the Edinburgh Fringe in 1995, and he has been back every year since then. Over that time, he has picked up a raft of accolades, and has been hailed by Time Out magazine as “one of the all-time comedy greats”.

2015 marks his twentieth successive show in Edinburgh – a record for the Festival – and he is now the biggest comedy draw of the entire Fringe. On stage, Jason presents a spontaneous, and, at times, manic persona, but he is not a quick-fire gag merchant. Instead, a large part of his act is unscripted, and involves spontaneous interaction with the audience. It may all seem effortless, but Angela discovers that Jason is very disciplined about his work, and brings years of experience and expertise to every show.

The Edinburgh Festival is now the biggest Arts bash in the world – with more than 3,500 acts, 25,000 performers and 2 million tickets sold – and Jason introduces Angela to some of its lesser-known pleasures. Together, they learn the secrets of the modern circus from the Le Meuthe troupe of death-defying acrobats. Angela hangs out with Jason as he prepares for one of his sell-out gigs, and they end up at a riotous late-night cabaret – where she joins him on stage for an impromptu session of step-dancing.

“I’d never seen Jason perform before”, Angela says, “and it was a revelation. His act takes nerve, skill and imagination, and I was hugely impressed. In fact, I laughed so much during his show that my face was sore for days afterwards.”
