In the fifth programme of “Bhí mé ann” we hear stories from the women who had to stand tall amongst the bombs, bullets and raids on their homes throughout the conflict in the North of Ireland. How they protected their children, their homes and themselves with all that was happening around them.

Bhí mé ann is a unique landmark EU PEACE III funded documentary series that recounts the stories of those who tried to live ordinary everyday lives throughout the conflict in the North. Parents, Children, Husbands, Wives, Teachers, Firemen, Nurse’s and Soldiers people from all walks of life yet they have one thing in common – Bhí mé ann (I was there). People from all sides of the community have stories to tell.
The series, which begins broadcasts on Thursday the 24th of September 2015 at 11.45pm on RTÉ One gives a unique insight into the lives of ordinary people surviving through extraordinary times.

We all think we know the story of the conflict in Northern Ireland – we think we’ve heard all the stories. But for the first time, this series documents the personal testimony of the people most directly affected. The people who went to school every day while bullets whizzed over their heads, the people who went to their jobs everyday with a warped sense of reality. But, this was their reality.
Throughout this series we get a sense of what people on every side faced, how they coped and more importantly how it impacted on how they think now. From the outside what seemed like a chaotic time in history was in fact someone’s life.

“Bhí mé ann” provides a unique insight into communities across Northern Ireland and how the conflict affected them. It has a wide geographical spread and a broad appeal for anyone interested in the real stories from the ordinary people. As important as it is for us to tell these stories it is equally as important for us to listen now.
‘Bhí mé ann’ is a series which came from the Glórtha Aduaidh project and is supported by the European Union’s PEACE III Programme, and managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by Pobal.
