OUT AND ABOUT

Out and About 10 x 6 mins

OUT AND ABOUT features the Doyle family so loved in the 2014 RTÉjr series OUR FARM. Each episode follows their adventures on family days out and about in their local area in North Mayo. Where OUR FARM followed the day to day activities of Liam, Deirbhle, Ailbhe and Féilim around the family farm, this new series takes young viewers further afield as we follow the children on daytrips and field trips – from fishing on Lough Conn to exploring Errew Abbey; handling birds of prey to picking fruit for baking; getting to grips with riding ponies to building a dam in the local stream. OUT AND ABOUT is a gentle observational documentary series which delves into the heart of rural family life and sibling fun.

Now all one year older, the Doyle children are just as happy to take us along on their excursions; to experience their fun in catching a fish, in playing hide and seek around an ancient abbey, in gathering sticks to build a wigwam in the forest, in daring to have a snake wrapped around their neck. OUT AND ABOUT is an opportunity to see the world through the childrens’ eyes as they discover new and exciting things to do on their doorstep.

  1. A Visit to Errew Abbey

It’s a lovely sunny day and the family go on a hike to visit the ruins of Errew Abbey which is full of interesting rooms and stone walls. After a game of hide and seek, they settle down for a picnic before making their way home via the lake.

  1. Wigwam Woods

Dad takes the children on an adventure in the woods. Féilim thinks the waterfall looks just like milk and Ailbhe wonders if it is made with electricity. The children hunt for sticks to build a wigwam and when it is finished, they all squash in.

  1. Catching Fish on the Lake

Dad takes the children on a boat trip to Lough Conn. They all sing songs and try to spot crocodiles in the lake before heading up the river where Ailbhe catches a slippery fish. A tasty picnic on an island rounds off a lovely day.

  1. Building a Dam

The stream on the farm is the perfect place to build a dam and have a boat race. The children make boats from bark that Ailbhe and Féilim have collected in the woods. At the stream they build a dam to stop the boats from getting lost down the river.

  1. The Eagle Sanctuary

The family visit an eagle sanctuary where they encounter all sorts of interesting wildlife from owls and foxes to peacocks and pythons. They even get to hand-feed a hawk!

  1. Riding Ponies

The children visit local stables to go on a pony trek. They tack up the ponies, plait pretty ribbons in their manes and go for a ride through the trees and the fields.

  1. Enniscoe Vintage Show

It’s a family day out at Enniscoe House and the annual vintage tractor show is in full swing. Féilim is giddy with excitement watching the giant tractors pull cars. After the show, they learn how to decorate cookies and then whizz down the giant slide.

  1. Fruit Picking and Baking

Mum brings the children to the fruit-laden gardens of Enniscoe House where they pick all sorts of summer berries. Later on at home, mum bakes some tasty raspberry muffins.

  1. Camping

The Doyle family go camping in the woods near the lake. They put up their tent, have some sausages and sing songs around the campfire.

  1. A Cycle Along the Greenway

The Doyle family take off for an energetic cycle along the old railway line.
