Our Seaside 15 x 6 mins

Meet the Lynn family – Johnny (6) Anna (4) Katy (2) and baby Sarah live right beside the sea in Killala at the tip of North Mayo. For this young family EVERY day is a day at the seaside. Whether it’s wild and windy in the dunes or hot and sandy on the beach, every day brings different seaside adventures for the Lynn children. In this observational documentary series RTÉjr viewers will share in the fun as we explore day to day life with the Lynns. With the seashore as their back garden, Johnny, Anna, Katy and Sarah enjoy all sorts of seaside escapades and each episode explores something new – from foraging cockles for dinner to roasting marshmallows at a beach campfire; racing crabs on the beach to exploring caves; flying kites to collecting driftwood on a wintery beach – there’re no end to the fun you can have when you live by OUR SEASIDE.

  1. Foraging Cockles for Dinner

Grandad takes the family out to the edge of Lacken Strand where they discover how much fun it is digging for cockles. With full buckets, they head home and help mum wash and cook them for lunch.

  1. Rock Pooling and Crab Racing

The children go rock pooling and find some interesting creatures. After catching a crab each, they draw a big circle in the sand and put the crabs in the middle. First out of the circle wins!

  1. Collecting seaweed

Armed with wheelbarrows and buckets the family head to the beach to collect seaweed for granny’s garden. Katy thinks the seaweed is just like pasta, while Anna makes a very special friend – little crabby!

  1. Gathering shells

On an adventure walk in the dunes, the children discover all kinds of interesting shells to make a special present for granny. At home they have great fun squishing putty and shells onto jam jars.

  1. Catching Shrimp

Dad brings Anna and Johnny out to the edge of the channel to catch shrimp with their nets. With a bucket full of shrimp, they follow their footsteps home before the tide comes in.

  1. Exploring Caves

The children put on head torches and have lots of fun exploring the beach caves.

Afterwards, they make a giant sandcastle, decorated with stones, shells and seaweed and fill the moat with sea water.

  1. Johnny’s First Catch

Its boys only as Johnny and dad go fishing for Pollack down by the pier. Dad puts hooks and weights on the line and after a lot of patience, Johnny catches his first fish! Later, mum and the girls join them and they all have great fun trying to catch a fish using rashers on a string.

  1. Body boarding

Its spring and the waves on the beach are huge. The children sprint into the water and have great fun trying to stay on their boards. After a tasty picnic, they use seaweed, shells and stones to draw pictures in the sand.

  1. Visit to Bartra Island

Dad takes the family on a boat trip over to Bartra Island. The children have lots of fun exploring the sand dunes, searching for old ship wrecks and enjoying some tasty sausages on the beach.

  1. Oyster and Jellyfish walk

The children are on a hunt for jellyfish. A shore walk works up an appetite so Mum and the children visit the nearby oyster farm to get some oysters for their dinner.

  1. A Trip Out to Sea
