Bhí mé ann is a unique landmark EU PEACE III funded documentary series that recounts the stories of those who tried to live ordinary everyday lives throughout the conflict in the North. Parents, Children, Husbands, Wives, Teachers, Firemen, Nurse’s and Soldiers people from all walks of life yet they have one thing in common – Bhí mé ann (I was there). People from all sides of the community have stories to tell.

The series, which begins broadcasts on Thursday the 24th of September 2015 at 11.45pm on RTÉ One gives a unique insight into the lives of ordinary people surviving through extraordinary times.

“I will put my Ulster before my daughters, that’s how strongly I feel” Joanne Hazelton, Mother

We all think we know the story of the conflict in Northern Ireland – we think we’ve heard all the stories. But for the first time, this series documents the personal testimony of the people most directly affected. The people who went to school every day while bullets whizzed over their heads, the people who went to their jobs everyday with a warped sense of reality. But, this was their reality.

Throughout this series we get a sense of what people on every side faced, how they coped and more importantly how it impacted on how they think now. From the outside what seemed like a chaotic time in history was in fact someone’s life.

“At the age of seventeen……

I found myself with a rifle on the streets of Belfast”

“I think to be fair we didn’t know who the enemy was

and we didn’t know who was going to hurt us……” Joe Hyland, British Soldier

The Series Director Sonia Nic Giolla Easbuig said “This series will appeal to everyone who has a curiosity about how other people live their lives – ‘Bhí mé ann’ gives a rare insight into how the ordinary things in life were challenged for those trying to survive every day with bombs, bullets and the trauma of the Conflict hanging over them. It was a humbling experience to capture these memories and to share them with you”

“Bhí mé ann” provides a unique insight into communities across Northern Ireland and how the conflict affected them. It has a wide geographical spread and a broad appeal for anyone interested in the real stories from the ordinary people. As important as it is for us to tell these stories it is equally as important for us to listen now.
