Over 50 nods for RTÉ television in 2015 IFTA nominations

RTÉ television has received over 50 nominations across a number of categories in the IFTA awards. The nominations are across a range of genres in on all of RTÉ’s channels – RTÉ One, RTÉ2 and RTÉjr. There were 10 nominations for RTÉ2, six for RTÉjr and 36 for RTÉ One.

In the entertainment category, RTÉ One summer hit The Imelda May Show and ratings winner The Voice of Ireland were nominated, while in comedy Irish Pictorial Weekly and phenomenal series Mrs Brown’s Boys are nominated, with Brendan O’Carroll getting the nod in the male performance category.

RTÉ One’s Fair City gets four nominations – soap and continuing drama; actors Enda Oates and Martina Stanley for their performances; and Gary Agnew for direction.

In the factual category, Lords and Ladles (Mind the Gap), much-loved family favourite The Zoo (Moondance) and Nationwide – Fr Browne’s Forgotten War which tells the story of the work of Irish priest Fr. Frank Browne who also served in the trenches on the frontline in France and Flanders during some of the bloodiest battles of the war.

In documentary series, The High Hopes Choir (Tyrone) and The Shelbourne (Waddell) are nominated, while for documentary single, Close to Evil (Praxis Pictures) Delores Keane – A Storm in the Heart (Scratch Films) and Man on Bridge (El Zorrero Films) are nominated.

In Current Affairs, Inside Bungalow 3 (RTÉ Investigations Unit) which examined standards of care at Áras Attracta in Co. Mayo,  a residential facility for adults with intellectual disabilities, and Above the Law (Below the Radar/RTÉ Investigations Unit) in which victims of so-called paramilitary ‘punishment’ attacks spoke, some for the first time, about their experiences, are nominated. RTÉ Six One news was nominated for its coverage of the Graham Dwyer trial for the murder of Elaine O’Hara and Nuacht TG4, produced by RTÉ for TG4 was also nominated in the news category, while Referendum 2015: RTÉ Live Results Coverage was nominated in the Live Event category.

In comedy on RTÉ2 The Savage Eye (Blinder Films) is nominated, as is Damien O’Donnell its director, and Andy Quirke is up for Male Performance in Soap or Comedy for his portrayal of the titular heroes, Damo and Ivor. The ground-breaking Connected (Animo) is nominated for Reality, along with Bressie’s Teenage Kicks (ShinAwil) and A Sporting Chance (Motive). Plus there’s nods for Second Captains Live, Two Tube and The Notorious (Motive), which is also nominated in the director category for Patrick Simmons Ward.

On RTÉ Jr, Our Farm and Shutterbugs are nominated in Young People’s – Live action, while in animations, Bing (Brown Bag Films), Lily’s Driftwood Bay (SixteenSouth), Nelly and Nora (Geronimo Productions) and Puffin Rock (Cartoon Saloon) are nominated.
