Joe Duffy loves to cook and to entertain so from September 27th to November 1st he is inviting everyone in Ireland over to his place for lunch on RTE One. With a selection of interesting alternative recipes to the traditional Sunday roast and with the help of guest chefs this seasons programmes will be packed with lots of new ideas of what to serve up for lunch. As well as making good food there lively discussion exploring the spiritual and ethical issues affecting us all. With guest invited over specifically from differing perspectives and with strong opinions – like all good get togethers the programme will be lively. We will be meeting people who have alternative ways of living and perspectives and there will also be music for every taste. Joe Duffy’s Spirit Level will have a refreshed daytime magazine style format. It will be inclusive of the wide audience Joe attracts – this programme will have something for everyone.

Make a date on your couch every Sunday, to join Joe Duffy for lively discussion exploring the spiritual and ethical issues affecting us all – these debates will be served up with delicious food and beautiful music.

 

 Programme 1 Refugees & Immigrants

The Theme of the Programme.

With the current Refugee Crisis in Europe advancing every day Joe and the panel will discuss all aspects of the situation and what it means in social, moral, and practical terms for everyone in Ireland.

Guests:

Father Alan Hilliard, Irish Bishops’ Council for Emigrants, Colette Browne Columnist with the Irish Independent and   Ghandi Mallak.

 

Independent journalist Colette Browne will share her own perspective having visited the camps in Syria. Alan Hilliard who specialises in studies about immigration will add to the discussion and Syrian born Ghandi Mallak will share the realities of his first hand experience of battling for Irish Nationality. From these personal perspectives the discussion can more fully explore the current crisis.

Guest Chef:

Ghandi Mallak will show Joe how to create Makloubeh – which means upside down – a dish made from chicken, aubergine and rice the dish originates from Southern Syria. This will be accompanied by a Cucumber salad.

Guest Musician:

Francis Black accompanied by Kieran Goss will perform a song which has personal resonance for them and is also apt in the context of the programme – Song Heard It All Before.

Lifestyle Report:

Ex- lorry driver from the Liberties Nick Costello became a Shaolin monk and teaches Kung Fu and Tai Chi in his home near Slane.  His father Jim was an ex-boxer who delivered the coal in the Liberties on a horse and cart. Jim wanted his son to be a boxer but Nick didn’t like hurting people.

He has built a temple and meditation areas in his back garden in Rosnaree near Slane.
