This evening Nationwide is in Bansha in County Tipperary looking at how people around the country are working together to improve their communities and to enhance the natural amenities in their area through Muintir na Tire, the National Association for the promotion of Community Development.

Nationwide Reporter, Helen McInerney recently visited the communities in Askamore, Co. Wexford and Myshall in Co. Carlow to see how being affiliated to Muintir na Tire has helped them get the best from their locality, and Valerie Waters reports on local project in the village of Rathdangan in West Wicklow keeping their community thriving.

 

Nationwide – Wednesday 22nd July at 7.00pm

Tonight Nationwide takes to the water and enjoys a trip down the River Suir from Waterford City to the mouth of the Estuary at Dunmore East. Helen McInerney visits the restored former fishing vessel, The Brian Boru, which takes groups down the Waterford Estuary where they can learn all about this very historic and beautiful waterway.

Also in the programme, RTÉ’s South East Correspondent Damien Tiernan tells the story of the returned emigrant from South Kilkenny who bought Waterford Castle which is situated on its own private island on the River Suir. Seamus Walsh emigrated to Australia in the 1980’s to work as a carpenter, he went on to become very successful in the construction industry down under.

 

Nationwide – Friday 24th July at 7.00pm

Presenter Mary Kennedy travels to Brittany in France which attracts thousands of Irish every year, to see the best of what it has to offer. She learns about the history and culture of this beautiful region, meets an Irish man living in Saint Malo who brings her on a tour of this walled port city in Brittany and tells of its Celtic connections. Mary also hears about the GAA community living in Lorient and of the Celtic Challenge cycling race event with it’s links between France and Ireland.
