The American baritone Thomas Hampson, who celebrates his sixtieth birthday this month, is internationally recognized for his diverse repertoire, which embraces works from the 17th Century right up to the present time. Known as the ‘Ambassador of American song’, he is also a passionate music scholar, writer and teacher. In the first of two programmes he tells how, after initially studying political science, he became a singer following encouragement from some of the most eminent musicians and teachers of the day. And he recalls in revealing detail some of the operatic roles for which he has become so well known. With extracts from works by Mozart, Verdi and Britten.
