Series 5, Episode 1 Synopsis

After DI Moynihan’s sting operation, Nidge finds himself out in the cold.  He travels to Spain to negotiate with exiled wholesale drugs supplier Terence May.  Terence is reluctant:  Nidge has too many enemies, there are too many rats in the organisation.  But Nidge assures him that he’s not beaten yet and Terence agrees to back him…  with conditions…

Three weeks earlier.  The body of the dentist Andrew is discovered in the canal.  Moynihan arrests Fran and Dean for the murder but cannot prove anything – but Fran has bigger problems.  Furious Nidge threatens to kill Fran for going off the reservation.  His maverick lieutenant begs for his life and reiterates his allegiance to Nidge – Nidge gives him a pass but tensions are rising between them.  Meanwhile pipe bomb maker Patrick has returned to Ireland determined to take revenge on Nidge for the attempt on his life.  He and a terrifying crew of fellow travellers attack Nidge when he is leaving Janet’s house…  Nidge is badly injured, his face scarred but he manages to escape.

Terence installs his nephew Pauley into Nidge’s team to oversee operations and protect his investment.  To Nidge’s irritation it’s clear who’s calling the shots now (Pauley even arranges a new bodyguard for Nidge called Beano).  Siobhan – still fuelled by hatred of Nidge since Tommy is back in a coma – is immediately drawn to the newcomer.  We learn that Siobhan is acting as an informant for Moynihan – and perhaps enjoying the dangerous game a little too much? Seeing an opportunity she sleeps with Pauley.  Pauley delivers a direct order from Terence:  Nidge must make peace with Patrick.  A meeting is arranged where Nidge offers to pay his enemy off.  But the meeting goes badly and Nidge accidentally offends Patrick – he refuses the money, and gang war is inevitable.  Nidge regains a sense of control by ordering the assassination of Lizzie, his erstwhile enemy recently released from prison. Feeling back on top he goes drinking with Fran.

**STRICT EMBARGO**

THIS Q&A WITH CAOILFHIONN DUNNE WHO PLAYED LIZZIE CANNOT APPEAR IN PRINT, ONLINE OR VIA SOCIAL MEDIA UNTIL MONDAY OCTOBER 6TH.

Lizzie’s killer is Glen (played by Leroy Harris) He shoots her at point blank range in the flat she’s staying in.

1. How did you feel when you read the script describing Lizzie’s death?

I was kind of prepared for it before hand. I had been given a heads up so it wasn’t a shock. To be honest, I was more surprised that she had returned. I had met Stuart in the street and he had asked if I wouldn’t mind coming back for a little turn in Season 5. I said I’d be more than happy to.

It didn’t really hit me until we had finished filming the scenes and I was saying my goodbyes to the crew. That was strange. This show has been such a big part of my life for the last three years and these people have become like family to me so it was difficult but at the same time I would never want Lizzie to outstay her welcome. In that I mean, that I don’t

want to play a character that has served her purpose and is hanging around with no direction.

There’s no room for ego in this. The story comes first. I don’t know where else there was for her to go.

2. How did you prepare for the scene?

I didn’t really get much time to prep. It was all very fast. We filmed for two days. I approached it the same way I would any scene. Just learn the lines. Focus. We had to be very secretive about my involvement so when it came to filming , I was dressed up/disguised as a member of crew in order to get me to the location. It was all a bit crazy. But great fun as always on Love/Hate. The scene itself was a bit hectic. We didn’t have a lot of time and in order to get the effects just right, it was tricky. But the effects guys on the show are great. We nailed it. Well I suppose we had to. We only had one go at it.

3. What will you miss most about Love/Hate?

I’ll miss the crew and cast the most. Those guys are amazing. So supportive. And great fun. It’s like leaving school. No doubt I’ll meet them all again on other projects though. They have made what could have been a stressful and difficult  job so much fun. I can’t thank them enough.

4. What was your favourite scene during your time on L/H?

I have to admit it was probably the shooting at the end of Season 3. Yes that scene. It was exciting and also knowing what it was going to do to the story. To be given that responsibility, I was honoured, really. That probably sounds a bit pretentious but I’m serious. As a female actor, storylines like that don’t come up everyday, on every job. It was exciting and terrifying all at the same time. I also really loved the scene with Darren and Lizzie in the church in Season 3. It was a beautiful scene. In such a fast moving show, scenes like that, that are so quiet and still really stick out.

It showed the vulnerability of these two characters and just how much they don’t belong in this world. It was beautifully shot, the lighting was amazing. It would be those two scenes.

5. Did you enjoy playing the character of Lizzie?

I loved playing Lizzie. She was such a wonderfully drawn character. It really was a gift. It was such a pleasure to be part of such a great show. If I have one niggle it’s that Lizzie and Nidge never met. Well face to face. But maybe that’s a good thing.

6. What’s up next for you as an actress?

Currently I’m on a bit of a break. I’m based in London now. It’s been a crazy two years for me, between Love/Hate, shows in the West End and New York and then coming back to London again for another Donmar show. I’m trying to just take it handy at the moment. Auditioning and settling into my new home.
