SEASCAPES

Bellmullet Image Name: Bellmullet

On Seascapes this Friday night we feature a tale of the sea from the West of Ireland and Belmullet. In the Autumn of last year a local documentary maker and cameraman, Fergus Sweeney, came upon a very large buoy washed up on the Mullet peninsula. The name of the Gilman Corporation, the manufacturers, was on its side. Fergus contacted them and they put him onto the owners, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Maine.
It transpired that the buoy had travelled from the Arctic Circle to Ireland in 18 months. Erris Arts Centre commissioned Fergus to produce an exhibition telling the story of the buoy and its journey , with the assistance of TY students from a local secondary school, Coláiste Chomáin. The exhibition will consist of an installation of the buoy, video, images and a soundscape that will capture its trip across the Atlantic. Hear more about the Exhibition and the voyage of” ITP 47 “ on Seascapes this Friday night with Marcus Connaughton when we talk to Brendan Murray, Artistic Director of Belmullet Arts Centre – Áras Inis Gluaire.
