To mark the culmination of the RTÉ Goes Wild season, Derek Mooney presents, along with Colin Stafford Johnson and Sinéad Kennedy, a special live wildlife programme from the spectacular Glendalough Lakes in Wicklow Mountains National Park.
This one-hour programme will showcase the BioBlitz event, bringing you the very best of Ireland’s natural world. The team will meet the experts, talk to volunteers, see the wildlife and introduce each of the competing Bio Blitz sites around the country and what wild wonders they have to offer.
BioBlitz events are held annually all around the world, inviting scientists and amateur naturalists to record as many species as possible in an allotted time, identifying everything from the largest mammals and the tallest trees to the smallest bugs in the undergrowth. Ireland’s BioBlitz 2013 brings together the country’s top biologists and recorders in a 24-hour race to survey four of Ireland’s most beautiful heritage sites: Wicklow Mountains National Park; the Burren National Park in Co. Clare; Lough Key Forest Park, in Co. Roscommon; and Colebrooke Estate, Co. Fermanagh.
Investigating limestone pavements, woodlands, bogs, and our rivers and streams, teams of volunteers will comb each site through the night, carefully identifying every species they find and relaying the information back to base camp, where the results will be tallied to reveal which site will triumph in Bio Blitz 2013.
RTÉ Goes Wild Bioblitz Ireland 2013 – The Results will air on Sunday 26 May at 7.30pm.
